Level 1 Social Justice Studies (SOS102)

This Social Sciences course focuses on the theme of social justice and is designed to explore the meaning of social justice in historical and contemporary instances where individuals and societies have sought to change society for the better. There are strong links to Catholic Social teaching while exploring current injustices in our community, country and globally and students have the opportunity to explore a current response to a social issue such as climate change, fair trade, poverty.
Historical injustice centres around the exploration of past racial injustices experienced in the 20th century USA and New Zealand and the ways in which individuals and communities sought to make change. Clear links are made between past and present such as between the Black Civil Rights Movement in the USA and the recent Black Lives Matter movement worldwide. Students have the chance to critically evaluate actual and possible solutions to injustice.
This is an integrated course where students complete 16 credits (8 internal, 8 external) from History, Art History and Social Studies subject areas.

Recommended Prior Learning
Students will be required to work more independently and at a higher level than in regular Social Science classes, and contribute regularly to class discussions. This course is designed for students who achieved Merit and/or Excellence across their Year 10 subjects. You may like to discuss this with the Co - HOD of Social Sciences , Ms Baird or Mrs Peszynski.
