Course Description

This course is aimed at inquisitive students who can question and critique knowledge and want to develop deeper understanding of our world at a micro scale to make links between science and people. It focuses on introducing concepts and skills necessary for 20th century physics analysis: the behavior of mechanical and electromagnetic waves like sound and light, the nature of light and images and how to manipulate them using optical systems like lenses and mirrors, the basis for our understanding of atomic structure and nuclear energy, and beginning to assess the accuracy of science and how certain we can be of our experimental conclusions.

   It is assessed with one external exam and three internals: a practical, a test, and a written report which offers a chance to revise for the external and gain credits.

Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Level 1 – passes in externals offered in Science, Maths and English OR interview with HoD.

Students will be expected to be enrolled in a Level 2 mathematics course.

Pathway

Inquisitive students who can question and critique knowledge and want to develop deeper understanding of our world at a micro scale to make links between science and people. More of an interest course, students considering professional courses like health science, engineering, computer sci should take PHY201 instead.
