Course Description

Teacher in Charge: A. Peszynski

This diverse and interesting course focuses on the idea of social justice and how individuals and groups in society are able to bring about change. Students will explore how New Zealander's fought against social and political injustice by looking at events, groups and individuals such as: Kate Sheppard, Workers’ strikes, Dame Whina Cooper, the Raglan Golf Course protest, the Land March, anti-nuclear protests, the 1981 Springbok Tour, the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids. The course will also allow for students to explore global movements against racial inequality by looking at the Black Civil Rights Movement in the USA and the Apartheid system in South Africa by exploring individuals and events such as: the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, the Soweto Riots and the Sharpeville Massacre.
