Sustainable Societies and Futures

This Social Science course offers a mixture of internally and externally assessed standards. There are three Social Studies standards, 10 credits internally assessed and 4 externally. We will also complete a 4 credit Legal Studies Unit Standard related to a law change in NZ. This standard will provide much of the evidence required to complete the Social Studies standards.

This course has an environmental and human rights focus. Students will investigate world cultures and societies as well as their local community. Topics may include: ideologies – what people believe and why, current events and issues impacting on people and places, social action and social justice that could help build better communities, diversity, influencing law and policy making, NZ gun law changes, and understanding stereotypes.

Understanding key concepts, views, values and perspectives is a key component of this course. Issues will be examined from a Global, National, Local and Personal perspective.

In 2024 SUS302 will be a UE approved subject. The subject domain where students will be able to earn 14 UE approved credits is Social Studies.

Students will be unable to take CIV303 and SUS303 as there is some cross over in content covered.
