Course Description

A reasonable level of fitness and a real interest in sport, fitness and movement.
NCEA Level 2 is strongly recommended. If a student has not completed Level 1 or Level 2 PE, discussions with PE Teacher is compulsory.


The activities in this course include carrying out a skill learning programme to improve golf skills; designing and carrying out a training programme to take part in the 'Tough Girl & Guy' Competition; and examining physical activity levels in NZ. Students will also research the impact that obesity has on New Zealand society. The course includes practical and theory sessions covering anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, skill analysis, and concepts of fitness and training methods.

Year 13 Physical Education helps motivate, engage and foster creative thinking in our learners and students are encouraged to embrace new experiences and overcome obstacles.

Start the year with a performance programme (3.3), followed by a quality performance (3.4) as a culmination of the programme.  During the winter complete ‘Back to the Future Scrap Book’ (3.1) and then study a well-known sporting event in NZ (3.5).  At the end of the year, take part in some FREE EOTC trips (orienteering and/or bush walk) to complete RAMS (3.7). Total of 19 credits.                                                                       

Doing regular PE lessons enhances an individual’s ability to concentrate and maintain focus. 

It helps to relieve stress and anxiety. School life is hectic for every individual. Therefore, taking part in
physical activities and education allows students to relieve their academic stress and anxiety




Course Overview

Term 1
3.3 Evaluate the effectiveness of a performance programme. 4 credits
3.4 Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting. 4 credits

Participate in the exciting and fun Tough Guy and Tough Gal Challenge for an assessment.
Build your own workout programme to see how you can improve your own ability and technique in different activities.

Term 2
3.7 Analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activity to devise safety management plans. 3 credits

Participate in EOTC events to help build your assessment.

Term 3
3.1 Evaluate physical activity experiences to devise strategies for lifelong well- being. 4 credits

Complete an activity by scrapbook, use your knowledge and technology skills to create something unique to you. Participate in different activities and use own experiences to build this assessment.

Term 4
3.8 Examine contemporary leadership principles applied in physical activity contexts. 4 credits

Learn and develop leadership skills that you can use in everyday life at SHC and life beyond SHC.
