Course Description

An internal course aimed at students who perform well in practical tasks. The course covers two Agricultural and Horticultural standards where students learn how to prepare a garden, grow seeds and take cutting to plant out in the garden. Two standards are taken from the Science area– these standards change with student interests. They have in the past studied standards from the Planet Earth and Beyond (earthquakes, Earth cycles), practical investigation (waka, electricity and magnetism, rates of reactions) or a biology context (looking at if Zoos are good or bad for animal species, micro-organisms).


Course Overview

Term 1
TOPIC 1
Agricultural and Horticultural Science 1.2 - Demonstrate practical skills used in agricultural or horticultural production -INTERNAL

TOPIC 2
Agricultural and Horticultural Science 1.9 - Demonstrate knowledge of basic plant propagation techniques - INTERNAL
The two topics involve the students preparing the garden for planting, growing from seeds and taking cutting. Care of the plants and harvesting what has been grown.

Term 2
TOPIC 3
Science 1.15 - Demonstrate understanding of the effects of astronomical cycles on planet Earth - INTERNAL
Astronomical cycles are:
• Spin of the Earth
• Orbit of Earth around Sun
• Orbit of Moon around Earth
• Effect of the Earth’s tilt and the heating effect of the Sun.

Effects on planet Earth may be selected from:
• Day and night
• Seasons
• Changes of temperature during the day and night
• Seasonal changes at the North and South poles, latitude of New Zealand, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the Equator
• Formation and direction of winds in the Southern hemisphere - direction of surface ocean current flows in the Pacific Ocean
• Phases of the Moon
• Formation of tides
• Neap and Spring tides.

Term 3
TOPIC 4
Biology 1.2 - Report on a biological issue -INTERNAL
Students visit Wellington Zoo to learn more about the importance of zoos around the World. They look at how the animals are housed and what care is given them. After the visit they research the issues of zoos and come to a personal conclusion about whether they have a positive or negative part to play in animal welfare.

Term 4
Revisit TOPIC 1 and 2.

Pathway

Students who enjoy science but struggle with learning of concepts and applying knowledge to questions. As the course is based on “doing” to gain evidence rather than writing. This course does not allow students to progress into science at Level 2.

20 x Copysafe pockets, 1 x A4 lined refill, $15 trip to Wellington Zoo

Recommended Prior Learning

Students are selected in consultation with HOD Science and HOD Learning Support. Students who are recommended for this course will be notified at the beginning of Term 1 2021.
