Course Description

This course is a combination of practical and theory work. It will cover various aspects of Physical Education including training methods, anatomy, biomechanics, skill learning, sports psychology, physiology, and leadership roles. Students also spend 3 days skiing at Whakapapa, and study risk management.

The New Zealand Curriculum identifies the following five key competencies in Physical Education: Thinking, Using language, symbols, and texts, Managing self, Relating to others, Participating and contributing. Physical Education contributes to people’s physical health and well-being, growth, personal development, and self-esteem. Year 12 PE teaches biophysical principals of the human body alongside practical application, event planning including Junior PE classes, the role and significance of physical activity for young people in NZ and risk management of activities that include the great NZ outdoor environment. 

The course involves a variety of practical and theory lessons these are all linked into their assessments to make learning interesting, relevant and we update the work constantly to make it current. Reasons why Physical Education is important as school work: it enhances an individual’s ability to concentrate and maintain focus. It is important for healthy growth and development. Physical Education makes a person flexible and happy. Doing regular physical lessons enhances an individual’s ability to concentrate and maintain focus, by promoting physical education, teachers can help them improve their concentration/focus. Social and emotional benefits according to the World Health Organisation allows students to engage in physical activity through play, games, and sport gives young people natural opportunities to express themselves, develop self-confidence, relieve tension, achieve success, and interact with others as well as learning about the spirit of solidarity and fair play. Team games and play foster students’ development of social skills and provide opportunities for them to learn group membership and leadership skills, attitudes, and behaviours. 

Physical activity can build students’ character because it provides opportunities to develop values such as dedication, honesty, courage, and fairness which is vital for the Sacred Heart student and will allow our Year 12’s to enhance these values as they look to step into the leadership roles of the school. Participation in a range of physical activities encourages students and young people to take on challenges. Physical activity also offers them opportunities to develop resilience and realise their potential to excel within the scope of their own abilities. Physical Education makes a person flexible and happy. Activities play an important role in the healthy growth and development of the human body. Taking part in physical activities and education allows you to relieve their academic stress and anxiety. Physical Education helps with stress, a physically active student is more likely to be happy and healthy and have a focus on their work. Ministry of Education states that physical activity has been linked with improved educational outcomes for students, the more physically active they are the more time they spend on-task and have higher levels of achievement. In New Zealand, Physical Education and Sport has resulted in increased attendance, higher student engagement and improved assessment results for secondary school students. 

Year 12 Physical Education the assessments have Literacy credits available to you, the work is assessed in a variety of ways that include practical, written, verbal, presentations and demonstrations allowing the students to have a variety of methods, within these methods you can show your learning which is key to their success. This subject sets you up for real-life and for life long healthy lifestyle.


Course Overview

Term 1
2.1 Examine the role and significance of physical activity in the lives of young people in New Zealand. 3 credits

Participate in a variety of activities (students choose) and investigate why activity/sport is important to young people.

Term 2
2.3 Demonstrate understanding of the application of biophysical principles to training for physical activity. 4 credits
2.4 Perform a Physical Activity in an applied setting. 4 credits

Participate in a variety of activities (student choose) and learn why/how the body works in different ways.
Participate in the exciting and fun Tough Guy and Tough Gal Challenge and link your experience to assessment

Term 3
2.9 Examine the implementation and outcome(s) of a physical activity event or opportunity. 3 credits

Teach the Junior PE classes, putting your skills, knowledge and encouragement to making the classes exciting, fun and informative.

Term 4
2.7 Analyse the application of risk management strategies to a challenging outdoor activity. 3 credits

Off to Mt Ruapehu! Try your skills at skiing or snowboarding, have fun in the snow while learning about how to reduce the risk factors to this awesome sport.

Recommended Prior Learning

Open Entry
A reasonable level of fitness and a real interest in sport, fitness and movement.
NCEA Level 1 is strongly recommended. If a student has not completed Level 1 PE, discussions with PE Teacher is compulsory.
