Level 1 Go German(y) (GER101)

GER101
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: M. Gallaher

Go German(y)

We may not be able to travel overseas right now but we can go on a virtual holiday to Germany. This course will give you an idea of what that holiday could be like if it were for real – providing you with a deeper knowledge of Germany and German speaking countries, traditions and culture in Germany.

This course is designed for you to gain confidence in speaking and writing German.

Course Content:

You will cover the following aspects of your “holiday”:

  • 1. talk about yourself and your hobbies (to introduce yourself to your host family)
  • 2. shop (especially for clothes)
  • 3. music, TV and films
  • 4. food
  • 5. festivals (esp. Easter, Christmas, Carnival)
  • 6. going out in the evening (party time)
  • 7. getting around the town (directions)
  • 8. Holidays – visiting other sights (Berlin, München)

A global citizen has the following personal characteristics - resilience, capacity, confidence and self-assurance - all of which are developed in a Languages curriculum.

Language learning at this level is not all about learning endless lists of nouns. The lessons will give you time to explore culture and communication as well as to revisit, recycle and retrieve the language taught over time, as well as having opportunities to be creative with the language. This is important because the exploration of other people’s lifestyles, customs and social behaviours help you to appreciate the ideas of difference and tolerance.

This course is internally assessed. You will gain 14-18 credits from a range of German, Media Studies and Accounting Level 1 standards.
