OED101

Level 1 Outdoor Education - The Great NZ Outdoors. Akoranga i Waho Tahi (OED101)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss N. Pollard.

We are incredibly lucky to live in a country with so many outdoor adventure experiences on our doorstep, however many of our students don’t get the opportunity to experience these adventures for a variety of reasons. Outdoor adventure is such a huge part of New Zealand culture and something we should all have the opportunity to experience.

In Year 11 Outdoor Education, students will be exposed to a wide variety of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, orienteering, rock climbing, kayaking, and tramping, which are all physical activities that require an adequate level of fitness and skill. All activities require students to be physically active which contributes to overall well-being. Not only will students have the opportunity to experience fun and exciting activities, they will also learn valuable skills such as demonstrating interpersonal skills in a group and showing responsible behaviour for safety during outdoor education activities. Participating in these activities would likely spark an interest in outdoor activities and potentially become a hobby for students outside of school.

Having the opportunity to initially experience the outdoors in a safe, school environment will give students the confidence to continue these activities out of school. The valuable, initial experience will develop knowledge and understanding of the outdoors that can be shared with family and peers.

Outdoor education is growing in NZ, the industry is becoming a focal point and more jobs are becoming available for young people.
